API Terms
Last updated: September 28, 2026
Effective date: September 28, 2026
These API Terms govern your access to the License Guide Network data API, API keys, and embeddable widgets (together, the “API”), offered by The License Guide LLC, a Washington limited liability company (“we” or “us”) through License Guide Network. They supplement our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. By requesting an API key or calling the API, you agree to these API Terms on behalf of yourself and any organization you represent. A signed order form with us controls where it conflicts with these API Terms.
1. License
Subject to these API Terms and your plan, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to call the API and to display the data it returns in your own applications and websites.
2. Attribution
Wherever you display API data to others, include a visible credit such as “Data: License Guide Network” with a link to our site, and don’t remove attribution built into our widgets, unless your plan or a signed agreement says otherwise.
3. API keys and usage limits
Keep your API key confidential. You’re responsible for all use of your key. Tell us promptly if it is exposed. Each plan has request limits, listed on the pricing page. Requests over your limit may be rejected. We may suspend or revoke a key that is shared, abused, or used in violation of these API Terms.
4. What the data is and isn’t
API data is compiled by us from public sources such as state licensing board websites, statutes, and published regulations. It is not an official record of any government agency, and it may be incomplete, delayed, or inaccurate. Don’t present it as official, and tell your users to confirm requirements with the relevant licensing board.
The API is not a consumer reporting agency and API data is not a consumer report under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. You may not use API data to determine anyone’s eligibility for employment, credit, insurance, housing, or any other purpose covered by that Act.
5. Restrictions
You may not:
- resell, sublicense, or redistribute API data as a standalone dataset or competing data service, or bulk-export it beyond what your plan allows;
- circumvent rate limits, for example by rotating keys or accounts;
- use the API to build profiles of, or make decisions about, identifiable individuals;
- use the API in violation of any law or in a way that harms the API or other users.
6. Fees
Paid plans are billed as stated on the pricing page or in your order form. Unless an order form says otherwise, fees are non-refundable, and we may change prices for future billing periods with at least 30 days’ notice.
7. Availability and changes
We work to keep the API available and accurate, but we don’t guarantee any level of uptime unless a signed order form includes a service-level agreement. We may change, version, or deprecate endpoints. We’ll give at least 30 days’ notice by email to active paid customers before removing an endpoint they use, unless a change is needed for security or legal reasons.
8. Widgets and privacy
When a page loads one of our embeddable widgets, the visitor’s browser requests data from our servers, so we receive their IP address and browser information as described in our Privacy Policy. If you embed our widgets, disclose this in your own privacy notice.
9. No warranty and limitation of liability
THE API AND API DATA ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS, TIMELINESS, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR LOST PROFITS OR DATA, AND OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATED TO THE API WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF $100 OR THE FEES YOU PAID US FOR THE API IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE.
10. Indemnification
You will defend and indemnify us against third-party claims arising from your applications, your use of API data, or your violation of these API Terms.
11. Term and termination
You may stop using the API at any time. We may suspend or end your access for breach of these API Terms, or for any reason with 30 days’ notice; if we end a paid plan without cause, we’ll refund prepaid fees for the unused period. After termination, stop calling the API. Sections 4, 5, and 9 through 12 survive.
12. Governing law and changes
These API Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, and disputes will be brought exclusively in the state and federal courts located in the State of Washington. We may update these API Terms with at least 30 days’ notice to active API customers for material changes. Your continued use after that means you accept them.
